The World Is Becoming More Transactional.

The world is becoming more transactional. What does that mean for your career?

I recently spoke to a long-time friend and business associate. We agreed that work has become less relational, where people can rely on trust and collaboration. Employees are treated as a cost or a replaceable part.

My friend knows this firsthand. He is a Big-4 CPA and top-school MBA, who worked for 20+ years at a major insurance company. Out of the blue, he lost his job.

I helped him get over the shock and disbelief about what happened and worked with him to find a new career path.

My friend was on the board of a local not-for-profit, where I was the president. He did super work in that area and transitioned to a great career in the not-for-profit space.

You may ask, “What does this have to do with me?” I think a lot.

1. You should be anticipating unforeseen changes beyond your control.
2. You should be open to alternative career paths.
3. You need to network like crazy, not only in your industry, but on a broad basis.
4. You need to work with recruiters and search people before you need them.

If you are a finance person doing well in your career, you need a contingency plan, in case you become a transactional victim. I would be happy to talk to you about steps you may want to take to protect your future.
