When it comes to finding a new job, LinkedIn (LI) has unfortunately become the currency of the day. LI profiles are relied upon heavily by recruiters and hiring managers. In my opinion, too heavily.

For recruiters, itโ€™s a useful screening device.

A bad LI profile can keep you from getting calls from recruiters, both internal and external.

My feeling is that the best LI profiles are short and to the point.

When looking to match candidates to a position Iโ€™m working on, Iโ€™ll look at your LI profile to see what companies youโ€™ve worked for, where you went to school, how much experience you have, and where you are located.

One of my biggest questions for candidates is โ€œHow have you added value?โ€ If you can get that succinctly into your LI profile, you will stand out.

The same goes for your resume, which is a powerful ๐‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘œ๐‘™.

Iโ€™ve discovered that people who invest time and effort in their resume interview better than people who donโ€™t.

I look for resumes that detail quantified accomplishments. For example, โ€œI helped reduce excess inventory, freeing up $1 million in working capital for XYZ Corp.โ€

Take a critical look at your LinkedIn profile and your resume. Make sure they support each other and present what you have done โ€“ and can do โ€“ in the strongest possible light.
